What are Cosmetic Products?

Cosmetic products are substances or mixtures that are intended to be applied to the external parts of the human body for the purpose of cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering one's appearance.

The key distinction for a product to be considered a cosmetic is its intended use.

It is meant to change a person's appearance without affecting the body's structure or function.

Examples of Cosmetic Products:

Cosmetics cover a very wide range of products that are part of daily personal care and grooming.

They are applied to various parts of the body, including the skin, hair, nails, lips, and teeth. Examples include:

  • Skincare: Moisturizers, lotions, cleansers, toners, face masks.

  • Makeup: Foundation, lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush.

  • Haircare: Shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, hair dyes, permanent wave solutions.

  • Personal Hygiene: Deodorants, antiperspirants, soaps, perfumes, mouthwashes.

  • Nail Care: Nail polish, nail hardeners, cuticle removers.

  • Other: Shaving creams, body powders, sun protection products, and self-tanning lotions.

Distinction from Drugs

It's important to note the difference between a cosmetic and a drug. A product is classified as a drug if its intended use is to treat or prevent a disease, or to affect the structure or function of the body.

For example, a moisturizer that simply hydrates the skin is a cosmetic.

However, a moisturizer that claims to treat acne or eczema is considered a drug.

Some products can be both, such as an anti-dandruff shampoo, which cleanses the hair (a cosmetic function) and treats dandruff (a drug function).
